Clear answers to the most common questions about cancer.
Is cancer hereditary?
Most cancers are not hereditary. Only about 5–10% of cancers are linked to inherited gene mutations. But if you have a strong family history, talk to your doctor about genetic counseling.
Can cancer be prevented?
30–50% of cancers are preventable. Avoid tobacco, eat healthy, exercise regularly, limit alcohol, and get vaccinated against HPV and Hepatitis B.
What is the difference between a benign and malignant tumor?
Benign tumors stay in one place and don't spread to other body parts. Malignant tumors (cancer) can invade nearby tissue and spread (metastasize).
Is a biopsy safe? Can it spread cancer?
Yes, biopsies are safe. The risk of a biopsy spreading cancer is extremely low. Modern techniques ensure precision and contain the tissue examined.
At what age should cancer screening start?
This depends on the type, risk factors, and family history. Breast cancer screening often starts at 40, cervical at 21–25, and colon at 45–50. Consult your doctor for personalised guidelines.
Can stress cause cancer?
Stress alone doesn't directly cause cancer, but chronic stress can weaken your immune system, lead to unhealthy habits, and increase inflammation — all of which raise risk.
What is genetic counseling?
Genetic counseling is a service where a trained counselor reviews your family medical history and assesses your risk of hereditary cancer. It helps you make informed decisions about genetic testing and preventive care.
